DO HARDWOOD FLOORS REALLY NEED TO BE PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED?
Just like any surface, hardwood floors get dirty too! Many people have switched to hardwood floors over the years, thinking that they are easier to maintain and easier to clean. This couldn't be further from the truth! Hardwood floors are actually more difficult to maintain than carpets, and also have a higher potential for damage that can result from improper maintenance. Hardwood is porous and will trap dirt, grease, and other soils, due to it's porous nature. Additionally, dirty hardwood floors will certainly dull the appearance of hardwood over time. The reality is, you'd be better off not cleaning your hardwood floors, than cleaning them improperly! Improper cleaning of hardwood floors almost certainly leads to damage and can actually present a health risk to you and your family. Keep reading to find out what popular cleaning method is notorious for damaging hardwood floors, and can also create a health risk to you and your family.
MOPPING: THE HARDWOOD FLOOR KILLER
Virtually everyone with older style hardwood floors, mops them! Despite warnings, and professional cleaning advice, people mop their hardwood floors with water and cleaning chemicals.
Why is this so bad, you ask? It's because water will be absorbed into the hardwood, due to it's porous nature. Additionally, water will enter into the small cracks between planks of hardwood, which will most certainly damage the hardwood over time. Excessive moisture creates a few problems for hardwood floors.
The first problem, is the buckling, warping, and swelling that excessive moisture creates in the hardwood floor. This buckling, warping, and swelling, damages the floor, and can result in loosening planks, splaying of the planks, and an uneven surface. The second problem excess moisture creates is called oxidization. Do you have ugly, grey blotches throughout your hardwood floor? This is called oxidization, and occurs when harsh chemicals break down the finish atop the hard wood, exposing the wood itself, where water gets absorbed and then dulls out the colour, turning it grey, similar to what you see with wood fencing. The third problem with excessive moisture with hardwood floors, is mold growth. Because wood is indeed porous, and there are crevices between every crevice, trapped moisture creates an ideal environment for mold growth underneath the floor. Mold is never isolated either, so once mold growth begins to occur, it can rampantly spread, creating a serious health risk for you and your family and requiring immediate attention.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY HARDWOOD FLOORS CLEANED?
Ideally, you should have them professionally cleaned at least once a year. This helps protect your floor from dulling out, and getting damaged. In addition to that, every hardwood floor cleaning in Windsor is followed up with what's called a preservation finish. A preservation finish does exactly what it sounds like it does, it goes atop the existing finish, adding a protective barrier from micro-abrasions from small particulates like sand and pebbles. It also adds a nice look to your floor, in either a gloss or matte finish, whichever you prefer.
WHY SHOULD I HAVE MY HARDWOOD FLOORS PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED?
You should have your floor professionally cleaned to prevent damage, extending the life of your floor, and as well extending the beauty of your floor. Additionally, often times homeowners are under the impression that it's absolutely necessary to refinish a floor completely when the appearance begins to dull out. This can cost you thousands of dollars, and it's no secret that most hardwood floor refinishing is an extremely invasive and dusty process which can create a breathing hazard for you and your family, while at the same time leaving your space inaccessible for up to weeks at a time. Professional hardwood floor cleaning can be completed in just one day, and is a fraction of the cost of refinishing or re-coating. It's a viable option for homeowners, and a necessary service to utilize anyways, as part of a regular maintenance program.
